Background of the Study:

Empowering women entrepreneurs is essential for achieving inclusive economic growth, and retail banks have a significant role to play in this process. In Kwara State, Fidelity Bank has embarked on initiatives aimed at providing tailored financial products and advisory services to support women-led businesses. These initiatives include specialized loans, business development programs, and capacity-building workshops designed to address the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs. The role of retail banks in empowering women extends beyond financial transactions; it also involves providing the necessary tools and resources that enable women to overcome socio-cultural barriers and thrive in competitive markets (Oluwaseun, 2023).

The empowerment of women entrepreneurs is linked to broader developmental outcomes such as job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable economic growth. Fidelity Bank’s programs are designed to enhance financial literacy, facilitate access to capital, and foster networking opportunities among women business owners. The bank’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and gender inclusivity has positioned it as a leader in promoting economic empowerment in the region. However, women entrepreneurs continue to face significant challenges, including limited collateral, societal biases, and restricted access to market opportunities. These challenges underscore the need for a supportive financial ecosystem that recognizes and addresses the specific needs of women (Ibrahim, 2024).

This study examines the extent to which Fidelity Bank’s initiatives have contributed to empowering women entrepreneurs in Kwara State. It explores the impact of targeted financial products on business growth and sustainability, and evaluates the effectiveness of capacity-building programs in enhancing the entrepreneurial skills of women. By providing a critical analysis of the bank’s role, the study aims to offer insights into best practices and potential areas for improvement in the support framework for women-led enterprises (Chisom, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:

Despite various initiatives by Fidelity Bank to empower women entrepreneurs, significant challenges persist in ensuring that women have equitable access to financial services and business support. In Kwara State, socio-cultural constraints, limited collateral, and a lack of tailored financial products continue to impede the growth and sustainability of women-led businesses. Many women entrepreneurs struggle to secure the necessary funding to expand their operations, while the existing financial products are often not customized to meet their unique needs (Adeniyi, 2023).

Furthermore, inadequate financial literacy and limited access to business development resources exacerbate the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs. The gap between the availability of support services and their effective utilization remains a critical issue. Fidelity Bank’s initiatives, while commendable, have not fully addressed these systemic barriers. There is a need for a more integrated approach that not only provides access to capital but also fosters an enabling environment for business growth through mentorship, networking, and market linkages. This study seeks to identify the key challenges hindering the empowerment of women entrepreneurs and to evaluate the impact of Fidelity Bank’s interventions. By understanding these dynamics, the research aims to propose strategies that can enhance the effectiveness of financial and non-financial support mechanisms for women in Kwara State (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

• To assess the impact of Fidelity Bank’s initiatives on the empowerment of women entrepreneurs in Kwara State.

• To identify the key barriers that women face in accessing financial services and business support.

• To recommend strategies to improve the financial empowerment of women entrepreneurs.

Research Questions:

• How effective are Fidelity Bank’s programs in empowering women entrepreneurs in Kwara State?

• What are the major challenges that hinder women from accessing adequate financial support?

• What additional measures can be implemented to enhance the support framework for women-led businesses?

Research Hypotheses:

• H₁: Fidelity Bank’s targeted financial products positively influence the growth of women-led businesses.

• H₂: Socio-cultural barriers and limited collateral significantly hinder the financial empowerment of women entrepreneurs.

• H₃: Integrated support services, including mentorship and networking, enhance the sustainability of women-owned enterprises.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study focuses on women entrepreneurs in Kwara State and the support provided by Fidelity Bank. Limitations include potential response biases and the difficulty in isolating the impact of banking interventions from broader socio-economic factors.

Definitions of Terms:

• Women Entrepreneurs: Female business owners who establish and manage their own enterprises.

• Financial Empowerment: The process of increasing the capacity of individuals to manage financial resources effectively.
